A Supervisor’s Academy has been designed and over 100 first-line supervisors have been trained in expectations, motivation, developing staff, communicating and supervisory styles. Training also is occurring for the Bosses of the supervisors. In addition, Internal Learning Coaches are being trained to take over the Academy workshops. An advanced course of learning is being developed for supervisors which includes building a team, creative thinking and leadership.

Over 1,000 new and seasoned first-line supervisors were team trained over an 18 year period in a five-day workshop called High Performance Supervision. In addition a one-day workshop, Transition to Supervisor, was offered to new or want to be supervisors. Other workshops taught included Cost-benefit Analysis, Creative Problem-solving and Leadership Skills for 40 line staff in the Road Maintenance Division in the Public Works Department.

Topics included identification and validation of each person’s style; the plusses and minuses of each style, how to identify the style of someone else and techniques for style flexing. Facilitated discussions also occurred on the concepts presented in the book Gung Ho and their use in supervising in the banking environment.

A Leadership Academy was created with five workshops on: the manager and leader; communicating so others understand you; negotiation; creative problem-solving; and measuring and improving work and services.
